Lolo Jones, who took home the USA and World championships in hurdle events in 2013, only achieved this feat with a lot of effort and tremendous patience. Jones was the only member of a family with five children who lived in extreme poverty. The mother of Jones moved around constantly and lived for a time in the basement of her church. Jones needed to go to an entirely new high school every year because of her nomadic lifestyle. Jones was awarded the Gatorade Iowa Track & Field Award for the Best Athlete at school and was also involved in the school orchestra as cellist. Jones was one of the top hurdlers at the time she entered the college. She won the champion of the 100-meter hurdles in the NCAA Track & Field Championship. She was also one of the participants of the runner-up team in the relay race of 100 meters. Jones was the winner of both hurdles in the indoor as well as outdoor hurdles during the NCAA Championship in 2003. Jones has been training since 2005 when she graduated from her studies. Jones was the winner of Torino Memorial in 2005, and also Ostrava and Heusden tracks events the following year.

Brandt relocated to Cape Town South Africa to Auckland New Zealand at the at the end of her teenage years. Lesley Brandt has shown up in The New Zealand TV drama series Shortland Street with a support role. She then appeared in This Is Not My Life. It's based on the real tale of Waimoana. Lesley Brandt played Naevia in the series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. She later portrayed the character in the Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
